Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many PGCPS employees are ASASP members?
          639 - Unit II
          283 - Unit III

  • Can I as an Assistant Principal serve as a Testing Coordinator?
Yes, according to MSBE you can serve as a Testing Coordinator

  • What is the legal responsibility of the Principal and Assistant Principal in breaking up fights, etc.?
We know that every Principal wants to keep order in and around the school.  However, Principals have no legal responsibility (or authority) to initiate physical contact with students in order to maintain that order.  Everyone has the right to defend themselves and members should be advised to use reasonable and prudent judgment in so doing.  The concern should not only be about physical safety, but also liability that the member could be exposed to as the result of a civil suit by the student or his/her parents.  As long as the members actions are reasonable, the Board of Education would be responsible for supporting the member acting within the scope of his/her employment with the Board of Education.

  • What are my work hours?
Your work day is based on 8 hours excluding a 30-minute lunch break.  The exact hours are determined by an agreement between you and your Supervisor and the school/office operating hours.

  • Can the Leave Granting Authority place me on leave-without-pay when I have accrued leave?
Per the ASASP Negotiated Agreements, Unit members shall not be placed on leave without pay status by the leave granting authority without prior written notice and justification.

  • If I am transferred or promoted, should I get it in writing before I start?
For any personnel action, be it a transfer, promotion, reclassification or placement in an acting position, you must have a letter from Human Resources stating the position, grade/salary and effective date before you move.  Also, you cannot be required to work more than one job.  It is the Administration's responsibility to fill vacancies.  Temporarily helping out does not mean doing multiple jobs.  If you are asked to perform duties not in your job description, again, get it in writing so we have something to grieve.  Too often, members make a move based on their supervisor's word without clarifying their position and pay.  The result, ASASP must fight to get compensation for the member.  This often takes months.  It is much easier to know before you leap.

  • Do I have to give my personal phone numbers to my Supervisor?
You have no obligation to disclose your personal phone number(s).  Therefore, you do not have to accept work-related calls at your home or on your personal cell phone.  Work reponsibilities are to be handled at work locations using work phone numbers during work hours.

  • My position/title changed; why is my Pony mail still addressed to my old position?
Please do not assume the ASASP office is automatically notified when members retire, change positions, work locations or home addresses.  Unless you tell us, we may not know for months (or longer) that you have changed.  Please keep us informed so we can keep you informed.
