NASA Names Headquarters After ‘Hidden Figure’ Mary W. Jackson
Mary W. Jackson started her NASA career in the segregated West Area Computing Unit of the agency’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Jackson, a mathematician and aerospace engineer, went on to lead programs influencing the hiring and promotion of women in NASA's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers. In 2019, she was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
“Mary W. Jackson was part of a group of very important women who helped NASA succeed in getting American astronauts into space. Mary never accepted the status quo, she helped break barriers and open opportunities for African Americans and women in the field of engineering and technology,” said Bridenstine. “Today, we proudly announce the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters building. It appropriately sits on ‘Hidden Figures Way,’ a reminder that Mary is one of many incredible and talented professionals in NASA’s history who contributed to this agency’s success. Hidden no more, we will continue to recognize the contributions of women, African Americans, and people of all backgrounds who have made NASA’s successful history of exploration possible.” Source & for full article visit: nasa.gov |
Mary Harris JonesThe most famous female labor activist of the nineteenth century, Mary Harris Jones--aka “Mother Jones”--was a self-proclaimed “hell-raiser” in the cause of economic justice. She was so strident that a US attorney once labeled her “the most dangerous woman in America.”
Jones made it her mission to stand up for the rights of the children who worked in factories and mills under horrible conditions in the early 1900’s. |

Paid sick leave becomes law in MD
The legislation allows workers at companies with 15 workers or more to earn up to five days a year of paid sick leave, which they could also use for such matters as going to court to obtain a protective order against domestic violence or dealing with the aftermath of sexual assault. A worker will be able to earn an hour of sick leave for every 30 hours they work. It will benefit about 700,000 Maryland workers. Read the Washington Post report here
